Volatility (also called variance) describes the rhythm of payouts on a slot. Low volatility slots pay frequently in small amounts. High volatility slots pay rarely but with bigger hits when they do. Medium volatility sits between.
Most studios publish a volatility rating (low / medium / high or a 1-5 scale). Max-win caps above 5,000x are a strong indicator of high variance even when the published rating is unclear.
Volatility doesn't change RTP — both a high and a low volatility slot can have 96% RTP. They distribute that return very differently across sessions. Choose volatility based on your bankroll and patience: high variance suits chasing big wins on a smaller stake; low variance suits steady sessions and longer playtime per pound.
Example usage
- Starburst (low), Big Bass Bonanza (medium), Mental 2 (extreme)
