The statutory gambling levy was introduced under Statutory Instrument 2025/213 (The Gambling Levy Regulations 2025) and commenced on 6 April 2025. Rates: 1.1% online GGY, 0.5% land-based casino/betting, 0.2% AGCs/on-course/bingo, 0.1% society lotteries/ELMs.
The annual payment is due by 1 October each year. Operators with calculated levy below £10 are exempt. The first-year total is approximately £120m, ringfenced for research, prevention and treatment of gambling-related harm. The National Lottery is exempt (it makes a separate statutory contribution).
The levy replaced the long-running voluntary contribution model and gives the regulator direct control over how harm-reduction funding is allocated.
Example usage
- £100m online GGY × 1.1% = £1.1m levy due 1 October
